What Does Certified Pre-Owned Mean?

When you’re shopping for a used vehicle, you’ll probably hear the phrase “certified pre-owned” or CPO for short. But what does certified pre-owned mean, and how do you know whether a certified pre-owned vehicle is right for you?

Certified pre-owned cars are used cars that go through a rigorous inspection and meet certain criteria to be considered “certified.” Certified vehicles usually must be under a certain mileage and not more than five model years old.

Many drivers prefer CPO vehicles to both new and regular used cars. CPO vehicles give you the security and peace of mind of a new car, thanks to the inspection that finds any worn, damaged, or broken parts that the technician then replaces with factory original parts. But CPO vehicles are priced more closely to used cars, which means they’re much more affordable than the same car bought new.

Certified pre-owned vehicles also come with a range of benefits that regular used cars often don’t, like warranties, a free vehicle history report, and sometimes, roadside assistance programs. You do pay a premium for CPO vehicles that you don’t with regular used cars, but if your budget can handle it and you’re interested in the add-ons you get with a CPO, it’s a great option.
