Cadillac has at long last announced the new name for its flagship sedan, and despite our earliest guesses, it is not named after a mythical creature or a ferocious bird of prey. It will be called the CT6, and while the name is extraordinarily simple, the final product will be anything but.
“The Cadillac CT6 continues our brand’s elevation and global growth,” said Uwe Ellinghaus, Cadillac chief marketing officer. “CT6 will constitute an entirely new approach to the prestige sedan, emphasizing a dynamic driving experience and advanced technology.”
The CT6 is expected to launch in the second half of 2015, where it will slot above the CTS and XTS. Given the need for linear nomenclature, it’s entirely possible that both the CTS and XTS will be in line for a name change as well.
“As we expand the portfolio, we can assist consumers in placing the cars within a structure, as they compare cars both within our showroom and across the market generally,” Ellinghaus said. “However, this will be an evolutionary process – we will only change a product’s name when the product itself is redesigned or an all-new model is created, as in this instance.”
Cadillac has recently undergone a number of changes, including the addition of Johan de Nysschen as President of Cadillac and the announcement that it will move its global headquarters to New York. Production of the CT6 will begin at Detroit-Hamtramck Q4 2015.
